Helen, Georgia is located about 1. 5 hours north or Atlanta. It was a Cherokee Indian site that later had settlers from Europe. They found gold in the area and in 1969 Helen began turning into the German town that it is today.

It is famous for it Oktoberfests held in October, but I will caution you, get there early or you can sit in traffic for miles.

There are many places to eat. Our favorites are Pauls Steakhouse, where you can sit inside and over look the river, Another favorite is The Troll Tavern which also over looks the water and they have outdoor seating. Mullys Nacoochee Grill is right outside Helen and another great place.

If you want true German food Hofbrauhaus is great. They now have picnic tables outside. It is on the other end of town.

There are many cute shops to look around at and many snack places.

Hoffs has great German deserts!

You can take a horse and buggy ride too.

We found some parking lots off Dye Street and there is a handicap parking lot near there too.

Southern Outpost Gem Mining, Alpine Mini Golf and ice cream are when you first pull into town.

In the summer tubing in Helen is a must! Click here to learn about our trip tubing!

Other fun things in the area:

Unicoi State Park is close by and you can rent cabins! You can zip line here. Anna Ruby Falls is here too!

There is a great cheese and wine shop, Chattahoiochee Cheese Market that also sells sandwiches and has some picnic tables that over looks the river.

Be sure to check out Fred's Famous Peanuts on the way to Anna Ruby Falls.

There is also Nacoochee Indian Mound 7086 Unicoi Turnpike, Helen, GA 30545

Helen has so much to offer and makes a great day or weekend trip!
